Core income was $203 million ($0.75) versus $409 million ($1.50). P&C core income fell to $397 million from $456 million on higher catastrophe losses and weaker underwriting. Life & Group swung to a $171 million core loss from a $22 million loss, driven by a $137 million after-tax charge from annual long-term care reserve assumption updates. Management said the charge is almost entirely offset by favorable economic impact from investment portfolio actions not yet reflected in GAAP earnings. P&C combined ratio was 97.0% (92.8% a year ago), including 2.8 points of catastrophe losses. Net written premiums grew 3%. The board declared a $0.48 quarterly dividend.
