US housing starts slump 5.2% in September, miss expectations

Housing starts fell 5.2% to 1.221 million annualized, well below the 1.305 million expected. Single-family starts dropped 4.6%, multifamily fell 6.7%. Building permits slipped 0.2% to 1.400 million, slightly above estimates. The data points to accelerating weakness in residential construction.
